Community Outreach
Community Outreach supplied each precinct with two new car seats in 2009, 39 seats in total, with donations from CPAAA members and donations from area businesses.
The CPAAA was also accepted as a member of the Kroger Community Rewards Program in 2009. Check with your local Kroger Store to take part.
Sunshine
This committee’s purpose is to spread “Sunshine” to the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association, Inc., members.
Everyone goes through ups and downs. Perhaps a card will cheer someone during an illness or loss of a loved one. We also look after the Columbus Police Department officers who have been injured on the job, or need an encouraging word.
Secret Pal is a way to get to know other members of the CPAAA. After submitting information about yourself (birth date, favorite color, hobbies, etc.) you draw a name and get a secret pal. During their birthday or anniversary, send a card or trinket. Remember, it is a secret! You can reveal your identity at the end of the year. If you know of CPAAA members who are ill or going through challenges, please give the chairperson a call so a card can be mailed to cheer them up.
Adopt-A-Sub
This project is designed to enhance the quality of the workplace environment for the officers that patrol our community and neighborhood. Alumni members volunteer to assist the officers by offering various services such as: picking up trash, planting flowers, washing cruisers, hanging air fresheners, painting and anything else needed to keep the substation a place for officers to enjoy. This benefits the Division of Police by increasing officer morale, which in turn, would increase positive interaction with the citizens these officers protect and serve.
Garden Club
The Garden Club members are challenged to find an area within the Columbus Division of Police to spruce up and beautify. The CPAAA received a grant from The Joseph A. Jeffrey Endowment Fund of The Columbus Foundationt for landscaping Police headquarters and Sullivant First Watch in 2009.
Fund Raising
Throughout the year the CPAAA collects pop cans. Each month the membership hands them in. This is a good fund-raiser.
At the end of the year there is a pot luck and silent auction. Other CPAAA organizations are invited. Donations are appreciated and accepted.
Our grant committee is very busy researching possible grants for all our projects.
Volunteers
Volunteers are used in other areas, also for projects at the Columbus Police Academy:
•
Recruiting Unit
•
Scenarios
•
Front Desk and answering telephones
•
Supplying and serving food items for graduations, officers who work the O.S.U/Michigan game, officers who work at Red White & Boom and other events at the Columbus Police Academy
•
Coordinate, prepare and deliver Day. Christmas Baskets (fruit, cookies, and snacks) to the Chief of Police and all 19 precincts for the officers on duty Christmas day
Program
Each month we have a program that is interesting and educational that covers all our membership needs on Crime Prevention and Safety.
Red White & Boom
Coordinating Red White & Boom is one of the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Associations major projects. Nearly every member is involved in one way or another. They also work or get donations for food and other items needed. We are able to feed over 500 officers, and it gets bigger every year. We have secured a small area in front of the old Police Headquarters, which is across from City Hall.
The purpose of this function is to give the Columbus Police officers who are working this event on July 3rd a safe environment to eat, and rest, during a very long and hectic day. Red, White, and BOOM! was a success again in 2009 with all left over food being donated to the Faith Mission.
